I think it’s safe to say that at one time or another, everyone has a feeling of being stuck in life. It could be a personal relationship you are in or have been in or perhaps it’s something career-wise.  It’s natural to have the ‘feeling’ of being stuck, but the reality is, you are not stuck. But believe me, I totally get it. When you’re in a particular situation, sometimes it feels as if there’s no way out.  The overwhelm hits you right? When that occurs, you feel almost frozen; there is so much going on that you feel there is nothing you can do.

The thing is, you may not be able to change an entire situation but you can do something.   But when the overwhelm and that stuck feeling occurs, it’s typically because you don’t know what to do.   One of the most important things to realize and I encourage you to do is to get ‘in front of’ the situation. Meaning, you don’t want things to get worse, so you have to realize the trigger of what is happening and then figure out what action steps you need to take.  Transformational Mentor Lisa Bechtol who helps people find their voice and live their healthiest life says “You need to be your own hero.  When you become your own hero, you take back your power, and you have taken the first step to moving forward in identifying the issue.”

Of course, you have to determine whether this is something you can do on your own or if you need some laser focused mentoring to help you move forward.  The key is to understand what you can do. So here are 7 ways that I help my clients with getting them out of feeling stuck.

7 Ways To Get Out of Feeling Stuck

  1. Question Your Thoughts –  As indicated above, the first thing we need to do when a situation comes at us is to question our own thoughts. Now I am not saying that this is going to be easy, because when there is overwhelm it’s hard to think clearly. But I am saying either on your own or with a trusted friend, mentor or coach, try to step out of the situation for a second.  You want to get in front of the situation and actually say to yourself ‘I am not stuck’.  When you do that, it may help you get out of your head. Now you may need to say those words several times. But if you say to yourself that you’re not stuck, you are more likely to get into a ‘take action’ state.  In summary, stop yourself short from getting into a bad downward spiral.
  2. Accept The Things You Can’t Change – Sometimes we have to realize that there are some things that we cannot change. For example, if you have made a mistake in life, sometimes you have to work on accepting that you can’t go back and fix it. Also, by being your worst inner critic, that is not going to change or fix things.  Other examples are getting laid off from work or having a relationship break-up. one-step-in-front-of-the-otherTypically those things are a done deal and instead of putting emotions on what could have been, I encourage you to work towards taking action on things you can do.
  3. Take Action on What You Can Do – In most situations, there is absolutely something that you can do whatever situation you have at hand. This will take a while for you to learn, but with some practice and real laser focus, you can learn to do what you CAN do, even if it’s the smallest thing.   Perhaps it’s making the call to who you can speak to, or maybe it’s removing something out of your life that you have been dealing with that has been ridiculous and you need to take care of. You may not be able to do everything you want and it may not be the results you want in the timeline you want, but the key is there is typically something that you can take action on.
  4. Trust Your Gut – You Have The Answer Within –  When working with most of my clients, often they come to me feeling overwhelmed and not feeling as if they know the right answers. But upon me doing work with them, we end up finding up that in fact they typically do have the answers within. But at times it takes some work in reducing the overwhelm to get to those answers. Trust your gut if you typically make smart decisions. Your gut instincts are typically on point.
  5. Be Ahead Of It – Before It Gets Worse – As indicated at the beginning of this article, one of the best things you can do is identify the triggers when you get into overwhelm. When you know you’re having a situation, definitely get on top of it so it doesn’t get worse. Think about what resources you have and then have the strength to ask for help.
  6. Take Responsibility – This may not be the case in all situations, but in some cases, you might be partially responsible for getting into the overwhelm. If that is the case and there is some responsibility on your end, own it and you’ll be better to move forward from it.
  7. One Step In Front of the Other – When overwhelm and stress occurs, it’s hard sometimes to feel that there is any way out. One of the things that you have to remember is that small steps forward will lead to big achievements. So in summary, one step in front of the other. Keep your eyes on the end goal, getting out of feeling stuck. Keep moving forward.
